Farewell Tape
Made the night before "Shorty" went back to
the USS Kitty Hawk in San Diego in late summer '73.
Man, did we miss him!!!

I 'found' Shorty after 31 years in Sept 2004! For 31 years, he'd thought Pete Burton and I had been killed in a car wreck (from a letter from one of the girls [Glenda, Rita, Diane] from Akron, Ohio) - no SHIT!

Shorty is still rockin' in New Salem, North Dakota - See him at a concert near you...

See Shorty, I told you I still had it!!

Who remembers the Stoned or Drunk Tape?

Who remembers the "Concerts?"
What great great memories with each other!!!

...And the walls came down...all the way to hell...
Thanks for the updates, keep'em coming!
"Concert By The Sea"
4 July, 1973

It was an all day event held on the old abandoned Pungo Airstrip. We drove down the night before in Stan Stockam’s yellow van and other vehicles. We found an abandoned barn and partied all night.

It was hotter than hell that day - sun beating down on the concrete and concert goers. Extremely tight security with a number of narcotic arrests, drug overdoes and heat-related issues. They kept announcing "stay away from downers" due to the heat. Hence, we kept popping 'uppers' - figuring it couldn't hurt, RIGHT?

There was a big party the night before at the crossroads just up the road from the festival grounds. I remember the traffic jam!

The bands (the best that Shorty and I can remember) were:
1. Savoy Brown (the headliner)
2. Black Oak Arkansas (they may have made an album of this)
3. J Geiles Band (maybe)
4. The New Cactus Band
5. Bloodrock
6. Foghat (maybe, maybe not)
7. Blue Oyster Cult
8. Tower of Power (possibly)
9. ZZ Top
10. John Sebastian
11. Dr. Hook

Frank "Griff" Griffin remembers: "I remember that me and a few others didn't have tickets to get in and, as you said, security was really tight....no way to sneak in until someone, I can't remember who exactly, produced an M-80 or two, which was hurled over the fence to draw the guards and their dogs away and what seemed like hundreds of us stormed the fence!!! Aaahhh, great times!!!

WOW!!!

Remember the party at the farmhouse the night before?

Karen B remembers: "The stage was a couple of trailer beds pulled up next to each other. The festival was poorly organized. The concert goers sat on a concrete runway in the blazing sun all day with no shade available. Hundreds of people were treated for heat exhaustion and assorted drug overdoses. The performances were generally good considering the conditions. ZZ Top and BOC stole the show. Security was over zealous with rented off-duty police, some with guard dogs and a large quantity of undercover narcotics officers who kept busy all day arresting pot smokers."

Zelma C remembers: "This concert changed my life. Was visiting Virginia Beach after the July 4th weekend and ended up with a bunch of partiers. I went back home to Morgantown - divorced my husband, quit my job, bought a car and moved. I truly think that if we hadn't had that day in the sun - none of the "magic" would have been there.

Another website claims this concert was called "The Festival By The Sea" and was on 21 July (1973 of course) and starred "BOC, New Cactus Band, Bloodrock, Dr. Hook, John Sebastian (what a downer in the heat), Savoy Brown, and ZZ Top

"Johnny & Edgar Winter
Reunion Concert"

"Still Alive & Well"
Released March 1973

Official Johnny Winter Website

(From Wikipedia) By 1973, Johnny returned to the music scene with "Still Alive and Well", a basic blend between blues and hard rock, whose title track was written by Rick Derringer as a salute to Winter's overcoming his heroin addiction. The follow-up album, "Saints & Sinners", continued the same direction; this was followed by another concert set, "Captured Live!", which featured an incendiary extended performance of "Highway 61 Revisited."

They Only Come Out At Night
Released November 1972

Official Engar Winter Website

(From Wikipedia) In 1972 Edgar formed The Edgar Winter Group, which included Dan Hartman, former Sawbuck members Ronnie Montrose and Chuck Ruff and later included the band's producer Rick Derringer in place of Montrose. It was with this band that Winter had his biggest success: the album "They Only Come Out at Night" featuring the #1 hit instrumental "Frankenstein", which used the synthesizer as a lead instrument. (During performances, Winter performed on keyboards, synthesizer, saxophone, and drums, all within the confines of the single song on stage.) Frankenstein reached number one in the U.S. in May 1973. Both "They Only Come Out at Night" and "Frankenstein" each sold over one million copies, and were awarded gold discs by the R.I.A.A. in 1973. The band also had a sizable hit with "Free Ride", taken from the same album.
